Before your first practice
Frequently asked questions
- What age can kids start water polo?
- Athletes can begin as early as 8 years old in our Orange Team beginner program. Athletes should be comfortable swimming 25 yards unassisted before starting water polo.
- Does my child need prior swim or water polo experience?
- No. Athletes should be comfortable in deep water, but no prior water polo experience is required. Before joining, athletes should be able to swim 25 yards unassisted.
- What if my child can not swim 25 yards unassisted?
- No problem. Gator Water Polo works closely with SwimTec, our trusted swim training partner, offering swim lessons for athletes of all ages and skill levels. Once your athlete can comfortably swim 25 yards unassisted, they’re typically ready to begin water polo training.
- Is the first practice really free?
- Yes. Your child’s first Gator Water Polo practice is 100% free. Please email coach@gatorwaterpolo.com before attending so our coaching staff knows to expect your athlete. At your first practice, our coaches will personally welcome your family, answer questions, and help your athlete feel comfortable in the water.
- Do I have to sign up before attending my first practice?
- No. There is no formal registration required before your first practice. We simply ask that you contact our coaching staff in advance at coach@gatorwaterpolo.com so we know to expect your athlete and can help make their first experience a great one.
- What equipment does my child need?
- A swimsuit, a towel, goggles (optional but recommended), a water bottle, and a positive attitude and willingness to learn. No prior water polo experience or specialized equipment is required for a first practice.
- Do you offer adult water polo in Gainesville?
- Yes. Gator Water Polo offers a Masters Water Polo program for adult athletes in Gainesville, Florida, for former water polo players, competitive swimmers looking for a new challenge, triathletes and fitness-focused athletes, and adults new to the sport and ready to learn.
- Where do practices take place?
- Our primary training location is the Dwight H. Hunter Northeast Pool, 1100 NE 14th Street, Gainesville, Florida 32601. Questions before attending? Email coach@gatorwaterpolo.com, and our coaches will help you get started.
